The Baroness of Surli (12)

 12

Samh 05.01.1345

Although her injuries healed rapidly and soon things returned to normal, she decided not to take her usual trip to Surli in the third month of the year. Unfortunately, although the injuries were gone, her constitution seemed to have been damaged by the events that had befell her. Prior to her capture, she had been the bastion of good health, but soon after, she began to be repeatedly afflicted by nausea, dizziness, and even fainting. These were so intense and frequent that it prohibited her from doing any volunteer work, and she often avoided leaving the house for weeks. She did not know what to make of her strange state.

One morning at breakfast, as she was reviewing the graded lessons her daughters had turned in to the governess, she felt an unusual tingle in her stomach.

She thoughtlessly gazed out the window and was only pulled back into the dining room by her father’s farewell kiss and his rapid exit from the room.

“You know, Mother, if some other woman told me she had the feeling I just had now, I would think to myself that she was pregnant.”

“What are you talking about?” her mother asked.

“I just felt an odd sensation in my stomach, like the ones I felt when I was pregnant with Jurita.”

Her mother laughed. “Well, perhaps you will soon give birth to a dream. One would think at your age, you would understand what it takes to be pregnant and brush those feelings off as indigestion.”

“Perhaps, the father came to me in a dream,” she laughed with her.

Suddenly, her father rushed back in, and grumpily he declared he had mislaid the papers he needed. Both women rose to help him look for them, and by the time they were found, the entire matter had been forgotten.

Tomorrow's post begins a new novel in the Upsilon Andromedae series: The Viscount of La Soutain
